Supply Line 2014 - Recap


May 12, 2014. Thanks to all who attended and exhibited at the NJSSA, Mid-Atlantic Association of Cleaning Experts' 2014 Supply Line biennial trade show. Despite the monsoon rains that occurred on the first day of the show, over 1,100 jan-san industry members (attendees and exhibitors) attended the two day event at the Taj Mahal Etess Arena on April 30 and May 1 in Atlantic City. 956 distributors and cleaning professional attended, up 5% from 2012. 


"We are encouraged that close to 20% of our attendance came form the building services and cleaning contractor segments," said NJSSA president Steve Lentini (Weeks Lerman). "This number has increased significantly from 2012. 


"I had a great time at the conference last week and I am now reinvigorated with all of these new ideas." Anthony Tyler, Old Dominion University. 


NJSSA Golf Outing


The low gross winners of the day was the team 
from Sheppard Industries
46 golfers teed off at Harbor Pines Golf Club on April 29. 1st Place Low Gross winners were the team from Sheppard Industries: Bill Wunder, Karrie Melita, Andrew Rosen, and Chris Lebendig. Melita also won the longest drive and Rosen won closest to the pin awards. 2nd Place went to the team of South Jersey Auction.

ISSA ICE Certification Seminar on April 29 was attended by 40 cleaning industry members. Jim Peduto of the American Institute of Cleaning Sciences, along with Dan Wagner of ISSA conducted the session and attendees took the certification exam at the end of the program. The seminar attendees included over 20 new building services contractors this year. 


NJSSA Seminars


Wagner also conducted a seminar for distributors and cleaning contractors on April 30 on "ensuring a Clean, Healthy and Green Indoor Environment with CIMS." Tim Kerin conducted two sessions for distributor sales professionals, and Steve Lentini provided his insights on successful sales communications and resolving disputes. On Thursday, May 1, Matt Moberg of the Cleaning Management Institute presented on-show-floor seminar on "Managing Time and Expenses." Lucky cleaning professionals and distributors won a number of great door prizes provided by exhibitors including new vacuum cleaner systems from show sponsor Hoover/TFI.

NJSSA President's Reception & Membership Meeting

NJSSA President Lentini welcomed exhibitors and members to the President's Reception held on April 29 in the Taj Mahal. Lentini reported on the state of the association and presented a President's Plaque to Dan Josephs of Spruce Industries for his service as NJSSA President for two years. 


Michael Tighe of Industrial Cleaning Distributors, a candidate for an executive position with ISSA, addressed the attendees as well. Lentini also encouraged NJSSA members to get involved in the association and to provide their feedback and input "to help make our show and our association better."

to Jon Scoles
During the reception, Jon Scoles of Scoles Floorshine (Wall, NJ) was presented with 2014 Bob Stader Award by Lentini and Ann Stader, widow of the late Bob Stader. In 1981-82, Jon was elected President of the NJSSA and repeated that role from 1999-2002. He served on the Board of Directors for Preferred Distributors (Prolink) from 1987-1990. In 1993, along with Barbara Casse-Bender, Bob Bushansky, and David Holtzman, he helped create Operation Clean Sweep which is still a major community action event carried on by NJSSA today. 



Jon was elected District Director of ISSA from 2005-2007 and served on the ISSA Stakeholder Committee that reviewed the GS-42 Green Seal Cleaning Standard. In 2011, he was elected Vice President/President Elect of ISSA, serving as President in 2012 and International Director in 2013. In 2012-2013, he also served on the Executive Committee for the ISSA Clean Standard for K-12 Schools, the first scientific standard in the cleaning industry. "I am deeply honored to receive this award and to have spent my career in the jan-san industry. I have made many friends and have enjoyed my involvement with NJSSA and ISSA and I encourage the next generation of cleaning professionals to get involved as well," stated Scoles.

NJSSA 2014 Board of Trustees Election


The following NJSSA members were elected to three year terms on the NJSSA Board of Trustees effective January 1, 2014:


Peter Davidson, Leading Edge Associates, Old Bethpage, NY

Peter Davidson was re-elected to serve his third three year term on the NJSSA Board of Trustees. He has been a Manufacturer Representative working with New Jersey and New York distributors for over 25 years. Peter previously served as NJSSA president, and in 2006 he served as NJSSA treasurer. He has also been the chair of the NJSSA Education Committee, responsible for the successful and highly popular seminar series.


Andrew Rosen, Commercial Cleaning Corp., Trenton, NJ


Andrew Rosen is Vice President of Commercial Cleaning Corporation, which is headquartered in Trenton, NJ. After being with the company for a little over a year, Andrew decided to diversify and created Commercial Supply L.L.C. Commercial Supply L.L.C. is a regionally focused janitorial and building maintenance supply company, with very strong ties to the green movement. Andrew is serving his second three year term as an Associate Member representative. 


Rich Casse, BCB Janitorial Supply, South Hackensack, NJ


Rich Casse is elected to serve his first three year term in a distributor position on the NJSSA Board of Trustees.  He is the Vice President of BCB Janitorial since 1992 and is a second-generation member of BCB.  He has been actively involved in the ISSA "Young Executive Society, District l" and has served in various leadership positions with the group. He is also a graduate of the ISSA's University of Industrial Distribution.


Jay Kliphouse, Northeast Supply, Pompton Lakes, NJ


Jay Kliphouse, President and CEO of Northeast Supply in Pompton Lakes, NJ, a leading supplier of disaster restoration, carpet cleaning, janitorial and safety supplies and equipment. Northeast Supply has been a long-time member of NJSSA and attendee at Supply Line trade shows. He is serving his first three year term in a distributor position on the board.

The NJSSA GHS Seminar on September 26 provided attendees with a valuable overview of the new standards and what jan-san distributors and cleaning professionals need to do to meet them.  Peter Henson of The Henson Sales Group gave an insightful and concise review that was designed to help members and guests train their employees and customers in a timely manner with the least disruption to business operations.  


"I thought the GHS seminar was invaluable. I am so glad my staff and I attended. We have put together a full presentation for our customers from that seminar. And boy did we learn a lot." - Andrea Riemer Ribakove, Vice-President, Mooney-General Paper Co.



Bill Balek, ISSA Director of Legislative Affairs also updated attendees on other industry standards that may result in legislative and regulatory changes for the jan-san industry.

Do Better People Close More Sales?

Recently a company reached out to me to speak at their National Sales Meeting. What was interesting about the request is that the President of the Company and their top sales leadership asked me to help their people become better people. Their feeling was that if their sales people were better people, they would ultimately perform better and that each of them would also make a positive contribution to the company culture as well. They also added that being better people would mean it would spill over into their personal lives, improving their home life, positively impacting their families and stress would be reduced.
